Ponderings on Virginity

One of the things I’ve been asked to do when revising BEWITCHED is to make it clearer how important her virginity is to the heroine and what it would mean to her to lose it.

Wouldn’t a normal romance reader know how important the intact hymen of an unwed middle- and upper-class girl was considered to be in the early 19th century?? And that having sex with your fiancé would be a big no-no?

I’ll go out on a limb and theorize that your editor has heard the rumblings online from readers who’ve grown tired of historical romance h/h’s getting it on without thinking about the social ramifications and consequences, neither before or after.

Hmm. I guess what he wants me to do is to illustrate the enormity of what she’s doing (hanky-panky, then sex with her fiancé) and why she later on is so horrified about her behaviour. And I think I’ve just managed to do that! Ha! 🙂
